Laminate flooring

The hard-wearing, budget-friendly wood look. Today's laminate takes stain-level detail and holds up to real life, in the dry rooms where a smart floor is the right floor.

What laminate actually is

Four layers pressed into one board: a clear wear layer on top, a printed wood-look layer under it, a dense fiberboard core doing the structural work, and a moisture barrier backing it all.

The print is why the looks got so good: it is an actual photograph of real sawn wood, often with the grain embossed into the surface so it catches light the way wood does.

The core is also laminate's honest limit: fiberboard is tough under feet but it swells when water gets past the edges. That single fact should drive where laminate goes in your house.

Where it belongs

Living rooms and bedrooms

The wood look at a working budget, with a wear layer rated for real traffic.

Rental and turnover units

Fast to install, hard to damage, and individual boards are replaceable if one takes a hit.

Laundry and utility rooms

Dry by design. Keep a mat under the washer and a tray under the dog bowl and it just works.

Whole-home budgets

Laminate where the budget is tight, hardwood where it counts. Mixing them is normal work for us.

Laminate or vinyl plank?

Same looks, different cores. Laminate's fiberboard gives you the best price and the hardest surface; vinyl plank's waterproof core buys you forgiveness where water might get in. Kitchens with kids and pets, mudrooms, basements: that is vinyl territory.

Stand in the room and ask one question: what happens here when water shows up uninvited? If the answer is "no big deal", laminate is a smart buy. If the answer is "problem", it is not. Compare luxury vinyl plank →

Laminate questions

Is laminate waterproof?

No, and any store that says otherwise is stretching the truth. The surface resists a spilled glass of water just fine, but the core is fiberboard, and fiberboard swells when water gets in. For rooms where water is a certainty, luxury vinyl plank is the honest answer.

Can laminate go in a kitchen?

Yes, plenty do, with the discipline every floor needs: wipe spills when they happen, mat under the sink and the dog bowl. If your kitchen is a water-splash zone by nature, we will probably point you at vinyl plank instead. It depends on the household.

How long does laminate last?

A good laminate in a dry room, cared for, gives 15 to 25 years of service. The wear layer rating on the box tells you more than the price does, and we will walk you through it.

Can you repair laminate, or does it all come up?

Planks are replaceable: a damaged board can come out and a new one go in, if you keep a box of spares from the install. We do those repairs too.
