Project schedule

Every flooring job is unique, but 40 years of experience means a steady process. Here is the timeline a typical installation or refinishing project follows.

What to expect: installation or refinishing

DayPolyurethane finishStain + polyurethaneWater-based / acrylic
1Sand, apply 1st coatSand and stainSand, apply 1st coat
2Apply 2nd coatApply 1st polyurethane coatApply 2nd coat
3Apply 3rd coatApply 2nd polyurethane coatApply 3rd coat
4Apply 3rd polyurethane coatApply 4th coat

Oil-based polyurethane needs about 18 to 24 hours between coats. Humidity matters. Run air conditioning or a dehumidifier, but skip the fans.

Water-based and acrylic finishes need about 2 hours between coats.

Homes with white baseboard trim can expect some touch-up painting where the edger rides along the baseboards.

Preparing for the job

  • Clear the rooms of furniture and wall hangings before day one; we take care of what stays.
  • Plan for pets and noise during sanding days; finish days need the space quiet and traffic-free.
  • For oil-based finishes, keep the AC running during summer jobs. Humidity is the variable we watch closest.
