Wood floor stairs

Stairs are the first thing anyone sees and the hardest thing to do well. We build, replace, sand, and stain them: treads, risers, rails, curves, matched to your floors exactly.

Curved and pie-step work done by hand, board by board

Stairs we build and replace

New stair treads

During an installation, stairs get the same wood as the floors: solid treads, built and finished to match, not an afterthought in a different color.

Tread caps and retrofits

Over old carpeted or worn stairs, capped hardwood treads turn the staircase into finished wood without rebuilding the frame.

Curved stairs

Pie steps, curved treads, and bending handrails, done by hand. Most shops pass; this shop doesn't.

Repairs

Squeaks, cracked treads, loose balusters: fixed and matched so the stair reads as one piece again.

Or refinish what you have

If your stairs are solid wood under years of wear, refinishing changes everything without replacing anything: sand to bare wood, stain samples on your own treads, finish rebuilt coat by coat. Same process as the floors, same dust containment, same schedule table.

Floors and stairs in one job stay one color forever, because they were sampled together. The refinishing process →

Two customers who mention stairs by name:

“Roberto and his crew did a super job sanding and staining the floors and stairs. Went from an orange red oak to dark walnut after a 4 stain sample. They turned out beautiful and we couldn’t be more happy.”

“Dilley Floors recently completed several wood flooring jobs covering 1,600 SF in our 200+ year old house. This included new hardwood installation, refinishing original flooring that had been painted, refinishing 80 year old flooring, and refinishing treads on two stairways. All the work was done professionally. The jobs were reasonably priced. We are very pleased with the outcome.”

Stair questions

Can you refinish stairs without replacing them?

Almost always, if the treads are solid. We sand the treads down with the same dust-contained process as the floors, apply the stain you chose from samples, and rebuild the finish coat by coat. Two stairways came back to life exactly this way in one 200-year-old house job.

Will the stairs match my floors?

Yes, and that’s the point of doing them together: the stain samples happen on your own floor and stair wood in the same session, so what you approve is what both become. One customer went from orange red oak to dark walnut on floors and stairs in the same job.

What about curved stairs?

Curved work is where shops separate. Handrails, curved treads, and pie steps get done by hand, board by board. It is slower, and it’s the kind of work we have always taken on rather than passed on.

How much do stairs add to a refinishing job?

Stairs are hand work, so they add time and cost to the job: the estimate prices them by the step and the condition. You’ll see the number in writing before anything starts.
