Refinishing

Choosing a hardwood stain color, on your own floor

November 4, 2026. 3 min read.

The most common thing we hear when a refinishing estimate starts: “I want it darker, but not too dark.” The second most common, after the job: “I had no idea it could look like this.”

Why screens and chips lie

A stain color on a chip, in a showroom, or on a website is a picture of that stain on someone else’s wood. Your floor’s species, its age, its grain, and the light in your rooms all shift the color. Red oak and white oak take the same stain differently. Old finish that has ambered for decades shifts it again. The only honest sample is one applied to your floor.

How sampling works

As part of a refinishing job, we sand a small patch of your floor to bare wood and apply sample stains directly to it. DuraSeal stain colors run the full scale, natural through dark walnut. You see the actual floor, in the actual room, at the actual time of day you live in. Then you choose.

From orange to walnut

A customer in Southbury had classic orange red oak and wanted it gone. We pulled samples on her floor, four colors side by side, and she picked a dark walnut. Her review after the job says the floors and stairs “turned out beautiful and we couldn’t be more happy.” That decision took twenty minutes with samples on real wood. On a screen it would have been a guess.

A few things worth knowing before you sample:

  • Darker stains show dust and scratches sooner. Satin sheen helps hide both, which is why most of our customers choose it over gloss.
  • Natural still means color. Natural finish warms and ambers slightly over the first year as the wood ages under polyurethane.
  • Stairs can go a different way. Dark treads with painted risers is a look a lot of our customers choose during the sample visit.

The color range, species by species, is on the floor stain colors page. Want to see stain colors on your own floor? Request a free estimate and we will bring the samples to you.
